About Gwinnett County Public Schools
Envisioning a system of world-class schools… The largest school system in the state and the 12th largest in the nation, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is a diverse and growing district in metro Atlanta, serving nearly 162,500 students and honored as the 2010 winner of the prestigious Broad Prize for Urban Education. The district has 22 high schools, including an open campus high school, and three charter high schools. GCPS’ rigorous custom curriculum (known as the Academic Knowledge and Skills or AKS) is combined with exceptional teaching and meaningful testing to form a comprehensive instructional program. Highly qualified teachers, involved parents, and a supportive community are key elements in GCPS’ quest to become a system of world-class schools.
Graduation and Testing Requirements for the Class of 2012
In order to earn a regular Gwinnett County high school diploma, students in the Class of 2012 must:
• Learn the AKS in order to pass classes and earn the required course credits/units (see chart below);
• Pass Gwinnett’s High School Gateway Writing Assessment, which is administered in the 10th grade;
• Pass the Georgia High School Writing Test (GHSWT), which is administered in the 11th grade; and
• Demonstrate proficiency in the four core areas— language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies— by either passing one EOCT in each of the core content areas or by passing the corresponding subtest of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT).
To graduate, Georgia students starting high school July 2008 and after must earn a minimum of 23 credits (also called units) in required areas of study. Students earn .5 units per class each semester. (Students on block schedule earn a full credit per class each semester.)

About Brookwood High School
Brookwood High School opened its doors in 1981. Brookwood is a school that values excellence in academics and extracurricular activities. Our record in student achievement is outstanding with standardized test scores that consistently rank near the top of metro Atlanta schools. The Brookwood athletic program has set the standard for Gwinnett County and Georgia. Other extracurricular and cocurricular programs are equally strong. We have award-winning programs in fine arts, performing arts, debate, broadcasting and journalism.

Instructional Hours
Two semesters of 18 weeks each for a total of 180 instructional days. Six classes meet daily. School calendar runs August to May.

Class Rank/Numeric Average
Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed at the end of each semester, including all attempted high school courses. This GPA is calculated on a 100-point scale. All courses are weighted equally. All students are ranked within grade levels at the end of each semester, based on numerical cumulative averages. Advanced Placement (AP) courses reflect an additional 10 points, which is included in the final numerical grade for the semester. No additional weight is given to gifted or honors coursework. Honor graduates have earned a 90% or higher cumulative average that includes all attempted high school courses.

Curriculum Offerings
Advance Placement (AP), Gifted, Honors, College Preparatory, and Technical classes are available in each academic area— language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and modern/classical languages. The school also offers a full complement of classes in health and PE, the fine arts, and technical education. AP classes are college-level classes. Gifted classes are rigorous, exceeding grade-level norms. Honors classes are demanding, often exceeding grade-level norms. College prep classes reflect the grade-level norm. Technical content emphasizes life applications.

Available college-level AP courses include: English Literature, English Language, Statistics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Computer Science A, Physics B,C Human Geography, World History, U.S. History, U.S. Government, Macroeconomics, European History, Psychology, French, Spanish, Latin, Studio Art, Art History.
For 2010-11, of 1066 students taking AP classes, 2120 AP tests were given, with 78% scoring a 3 or higher.
